A Tragic Tale Told by Seven People

They killed Caesar!

I saw the whole thing.

The person was using a knife.

No, many knives.

At least six.

——————————————–

“It happened right here.

Oh how awful it was when they surprised him so.

First bringing him up,

Then knocking him down

After already praising him and kissing his feet.

——————————————–

Why would someone do this:

Kill a man in cold blood?

His blood

It was still warm in their hands.

I saw them there, in the Senate:

Bright red, like strawberries

Or like a butcher, proud in his work

Showing off his skill with a knife.

Absolutely awful.

——————————————–

I met him once.

When he was still alive, of course.

They tried to give him a crown or something.

I was blinded by that gift

Glistening in the courtyard like the sun itself.

And he just refused the thing! Three times, the fool…

He must have wished he was dead then.

——————————————–

They say his body looked awful.

Like a pincushion missing all its pins

Or ripped curtains covered up to hold a pig for slaughter.

No man could be raised up so high

Only to be torn down so low.

Oh, Great Caesar, praise be to you!

But as Brutus said:

It had to be done.

——————————————–

Oh the sad, troubled man…

Do I speak of Caesar, you ask? No

I speak of his dear friend Antony.

The poor man…

His eyes, full of tears

As red as Brutus’ hands, and Caesar’s body.

And as wet as the steps they laid him on.

I cry for him, just as he does for Caesar.

——————————————–

Brutus is a monster!

‘Honorable man’, pah!

No honorable man would kill a man as great as Caesar

And he was a great man, his will proved it so.

‘When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept,’ Antony said.

And now we weep for him, but Caesar does not.

He has many mouths, silenced with blood, but screaming

“Look! Look at what these traitors did to me!

They care not for me or any of you!”

The tears now burn like fire in my eyes.

The rage flames in my heart

It would not be mutiny against Brutus like Antony speaks,

But revenge for Caesar.

He deserved a more honorable death

And they do not.
