Toy Story 4 Trailer Analysis – Forky

:39 = “Why am I alive?”-Forky

This will probably be the most bizarre and existential movie so far in the Toy Story series. I don’t know if anyone has been asking for it, but it exists and will be released on June 21.

Forky is a toy character of the new generation. He’s a toy that doesn’t want to exist, and who can’t relate with that? He’s not even a fork and his name is “Forky”.

I’ve seen at places like Target and Walmart a toy of Forky, which is kind of weird capitalism because it’s a toy made out of crafts, but then is sold as a mold? I could make one if I really felt like it, and for a much cheaper price than what the official toy is being sold at.

The movie trailer seems to suggest that anything that a child plays with comes to life now, and not just actual toys. As long as it has eyes, a mouth, and some kind of appendage to move, it’s sentient.

If this is true, that means a lot of things people thought were true in the Toy Story universe could be changed completely. It can also open up a lot of different questions

  • How is the spork alive?

  • Why is it alive?

  • Why isn’t its name Sporky?

  • Did this questioning of life happen when the other toys gained consciousness? Sure, in the first movie Buzz didn’t know he was a toy, but he knew he was alive and everything

  • What will happen if, at the end of the movie the mom finds the spork on the floor and just throws it away? Surely the daughter would be upset and everything, but in reality it is just a plastic spork and definitely more fragile than other toys. If the toy is left on the floor and gets accidentally stepped on, it is over for the toy. Its short existence is no more. Is this supposed to be an allegory for our generation? So many people are struggling with life, and this new toy seems to be the embodiment of anxiety. In some ways, it’s a tragedy to be alive: we earn so little money for ever increasing costs of living, climate change is destroying our world and there is barely anything we can do as individuals, healthcare is a mess, our country seems to be tearing itself apart and I am terrified if it turns into a Civil War II, or somehow the country goes to war with another country and I am drafted. I didn’t want to sign up for the draft and fight for a country that doesn’t even care about me or the people I love. And yet if a draft happens I’ll probably be taken and forced to fight somewhere. I also don’t what am I going to do when I graduate college next year. I’ve got to look up jobs with my major, but it seems really hard right now because from what I learned film isn’t usually a job that’s consistent or permanent. I have loans to pay, and I don’t know how to do that yet. I don’t know how I will with the job I need to find. And will my friends still talk to me after we all split off to do our own thing? It seems like now they barely do anyway, and they only respond to me when I initiate a conversation, which gets hard to do sometimes because I always have to do it. I can’t keep doing it all the time, but it seems like it’s the only way I am in contact with people. And sometimes they respond way later, which is understandable most of the time because of life, but with others they don’t respond at all and it hurts, you know? I’ve stopped trying with those people and I talk to way less people now, and that’s sad. I truly appreciate the few people who do initiate conversations with me when they can. I just want people to talk to me first sometimes so I feel like I matter. I know I matter, I just need other people’s help sometimes. Is that too much to ask? Genuinely I don’t know. My thoughts and feeling are definitely valid, but they’re not always accepted. Is that what this movie is trying to do? Is the movie going to be about Forky feeling alone and isolated until he realizes how important friendship is, and to appreciate the friends he has and cares about, and those who care about him? Am Forky? Are all these feelings about my purpose and loneliness that sometime appear going to be somewhat resolved or at least expressed in the film? Does any of this even make any sense?
